The BitTorrent service will launch its own cryptocurrency with the ticker BTT (BitTorrent Token). It will run on Tron — in June 2018, the head of the blockchain startup, Justin Sun, acquired the file-sharing protocol for approximately $140 million. Service users will be able to pay with the new altcoin for sending or faster downloading of files. The BTT coin will be available outside the United States through the Binance Launchpad service for entrepreneurs. Tokens will also be distributed via airdrops.
The company emphasized that users who do not want to earn or spend cryptocurrency will be able to exchange files for free. Initially, the token will operate through the Windows-based µTorrent Classic client.
